About the producer
Mike Shepherd is originally from Waihi, New Zealand, and he's been living and making wine in Catalonia, Spain since 2008. His winemaking journey began in 2009 in Martinborough, NZ, working with Lance Redgewell at Cambridge Road Winery, where he met Alex Craighead (Kindeli Wines) – a friend and co-founder of Artesano Vintners.
He worked vintages across Spain (Toro, Bierzo, Calatayud, Priorat, Montsant), New Zealand, and in France (Roussillon). In 2015, Alex and Mike founded Artesano Vintners España. From just 1,100 bottles in our first year, we now produce over 20,000 bottles annually. He started making wine in La Boella, Reus, and then in 2019, moved to El Viver de Celleristes (Winemaker's "Nursery" https://concactiva.cat/?page_id=426) a local government initiative to help small winemakers and viticultors get a headstart in their projects.
**Artesano Vintners **cultivate native grapes such as: Xarel·lo, Macabeu, Parellada, Moscatel de Alexandria, Garnatxa Blanca, Garnatxa Negra, Trepat, Carinyena and Cabernet Franc. They have vineyards in DO Conca de Barberà, DO Terra Alta, DO Penedès and Alt Camp in Catalunya, where the soils vary from limestone to sandy hills.
Collaborations They’ve had the chance to work with a number of international winemakers, including:
They also produce the house wines—red, white, orange, and pet-nat—for Bar Brutal / Can Cisa, one of the world’s most iconic natural wine bars.
All wines has been naturally fermented with organic certified grapes, hand harvest, nor fining/filtering and no added sulphites. Cheers ;-)
